The Gospel according to Rubeus Hagrid

We first see Rubeus Hagrid in the initial scenes of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone carrying the baby boy-who-lived. He has the stature of a giant and nature of a puppy. He consequently befriends the “chosen one” and aids him throughout the series.

Besides aiding in the fight against You-know-who, Hagrid also taught the Gospel in very subtle ways. Oh, yes! Many of his famous lines teach important principles that lead to eternal salvation. Therefore may you be uplifted and strengthened in the faith by Brother Hagrid.

Teachings from Brother Hagrid

“You all righ’?”  he [Hagrid] said gruffly.

“Yeah,” said Harry.

“No, yeh’re not,” said Hagrid. “Course yeh’re not. But yeh will be.”

-Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Hagrid is very aware of many things in life. He is a surprisingly wise character, despite his apparently simple demeanor. For instance, in this quote, Rubeus teaches us that life might not be great right now, but things will get better. President Hinkley taught this same idea when he said, “Keep trying. Keep believing. Be happy. Don’t get discouraged. Things will work out.”

Things will work out for us in the long run. With faith, and a fair bit of wizarding magic (ok, not really), things will work out.

“It’s changing out there. Just like last time. There’s a storm coming, Harry. And we all best be ready when she does.” -Hagrid from Harry Potter and the GOblet of Fire

The practical groundskeeper of Hogwarts now teaches us that there is a storm in the world. He teaches us that we can’t avoid the coming struggles in the world at large, and in our own personal lives. Similarly, Elder Quentin L. Cook adds that “Often as we experience the storms of life, we witness the Lord’s hand in providing eternal protections.”

Even with the coming storms, we can rest assured that the Lord will protect and prepare us for what comes.

“You’re a Wizard Harry… an’ a thumpin’ good’un I’d say, once yeh’ve been trained up a bit. With a mum an’ dad like yours, what else would yeh be?” -Hagrid from Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone

Hagrid knows the importance of our heritage. We, like Harry, have parents that have given us a heritage of which to be proud. Our Heavenly Parents have given each of us incredible attributes and potential. Elder Ronald A. Rasband adds to this principle when he says, “In the midst of life’s greatest storms, do not forget your divine heritage as a son or daughter of God.”

We can rest easier during life’s storms thanks to the knowledge of our divine heritage. Our Heavenly Parents have prepared us for this life, and are preparing us for the next.

“I shouldn’t have said that.”  -Hagrid from Harry potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Wise Hagrid knows well that there is a difference between right and wrong. He knows that sometimes we do things that we shouldn’t have. Our half-giant friend also knows that once you do these things, you should change and stop doing them. Accordingly, he only repeats this line in the Chamber of Secrets but doesn’t have to say it again throughout the rest of the series.

On this same vein, President Henry B. Eyring teaches, “If we choose the right, we will find happiness—in time.” We can choose the right and be happy. It won’t always be immediate or clear. It will come though. We can be certain of our happy ending.

The “Hagrid” in Our Lives

Though we might not have the benefit of being friends with this friendly giant, we can still benefit from the giants among our friends. May we all learn to see the light of the Gospel in everything we do, even among the wild wizarding world of Harry Potter.  Doing so will build our faith, which is the real magic in time and eternity.

Please comment and share this article with your friends and family. If I missed any of Hagrid’s more memorable lines, please let me know. If you have any other great one-liners, I’d love to hear them below as well. Be sure to watch out for our other Harry Potter articles.
