Excommunicated Church Leader’s Former Missionary Shares His Thoughts


James J. Hamula was excommunicated from the LDS Church “following church disciplinary action by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles,” Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a prepared release Tuesday, August 8.

Several media outlets covered the announcement, leading to social media comments and speculation about what, exactly, happened.

Randy McDougal, who served as a missionary under Hamula, published a Facebook post asking for understanding and mercy toward Hamula.

    I guess it is human nature jeanbodie….I have been on the receiving end of judgemental remarks etc. I think we should be kind to everyone regardless of their status in the church or anywhere.

    Thank you for your wonderful tribute to your friend James J Hamula. It is none of anyone else’s business what the reasons are for the excommunication. I will pray for him that he will be re-baptised and that others will not stand in judgement. I am an inactive member and finding it very difficult to return to my branch as it is not always easy to do so. Thank you Randy McDougal.
