SCOTUS: And the winner is... Neil Gorsuch

Gorsuch was unanimously approved by the Senate 10 years ago to rule in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.  Let's see how tough this Senate hearing is gonna be.  Remember, the Democrats are still on a boycott for Price and Mnuchin.

Anyway, Gorsuch is going to be confirmed.  I'm fairly certain of it.  That should make the Never Trumpers happy so hopefully they'll be a bit more forgiving of Trump's unconventional ways.

Go Gorsuch!  May you get through the Senate without a hitch!

He gave a speech at Case Western Reserve University shortly after Scalia passed.

Quote

...The “great project of Justice Scalia’s career was to remind us of the differences between judges and legislators. . . .  To remind us that legislators may appeal to their own moral convictions and to claims about social utility to reshape the law as they think it should be in the future. But that judges should do none of these things in a democratic society. That judges should instead strive (if humanly and so imperfectly) to apply the law as it is, focusing backward, not forward, and looking to text, structure, and history to decide what a reasonable reader at the time of the events in question would have understood the law to be – not to decide cases based on their own moral convictions or the policy consequences they believe might service society best.”

The only thing I can find wrong with him, is he lives in Boulder.

For those unfamiliar with Colorado, NT is referring to "The People's Republic of Boulder".

I think every state has one. A hotbed of socialism.

And he's 49, so he'll be sitting on the bench for a long, long, long time.

That's what I've been hoping for; relatively young conservatives so it'll hopefully be a while before anybody gets another chance to stack the court.

Five sensible Constitutionalists in their 40s would get us past a lot of potential idiocy from the other branches.

If Kennedy, Ginsburg, and Breyer all retire or die, we'd have it.

Right now there's Alito and Thomas.  Roberts and Kennedy are swing votes.  But they've been leaning further left with each major decision.  And I'm not all that certain about Alito.

I hope Thomas and Kennedy retire ASAP.

Yeah, but Boulder occasionally makes international news.  After a bunch of Lynx attacks, they had people protesting against the injured humans for encroaching on their territory.  They made news a few years back for having a multicolored phallus display in a library.  Sometimes their government buildings get caught not flying the flag.

Why Thomas?  I saw him as a Constitutionalist.

I adore Clarence Thomas, he's a personal idol to me.

But he's getting older and I want him to retire now while Trump is president.

I can see that sentiment.  But he's got a good 10 years or more in him.  I'd say wait for a few years at least.

His brother died young that's what worries me.

Heart attack while jogging.

And TX governor Abbott is a paraplegic due to a freak accident while jogging.  You'd think people would learn that jogging is more likely to get you killed or seriously injured than plenty of "extreme" sports.

Maybe we need a batch of Supreme Court Justices who can look through all the Founders' papers and realize that while we certainly have rights to walk and run, jogging is never once mentioned as a protected activity.

As for Alito, I think he'll settle in to his own groove soon.  He did admire Scalia's opinions, (for good reason - the first thing I check for when considering an attorney is whether they've read Scalia Dissents or A Matter of Interpretation.) and I suspect he's still recovering from that unpleasant surprise.

Well, there goes Gowdy's warning that Congress is going to mandate Jogging as part of healthcare.

Do you need legal assistance that often?

Not that often, but I do like to keep track of who's good.  Especially now that I have a vindictive, paranoid ex wife who claims things like I'm stalking her because I go by her place twice a day.  (Never mind that every alternate route from home to work more than doubles the distance, and that I've lived and worked in the current locations (and she knew that) for over a year before she moved to her current place.)
