Elder Robert D. Hales passes away

He was the only one I've ever met in person.  He was giving advice to bishoprics and stake presidencies in the area, and I had accidentally crashed the meeting.  Someone asked him how big a deal we should make about demanding accurate and complete receipts for reimbursements or fast offerings.  He looked a bit sheepish, admitted that he was always being called to repentance for being bad at submitting his own expenses, and said we probably pay way too much attention to the details.  The important thing, he indicated, was the member's relationship to God, and would it be strengthened or weakened if we wrote out this or that check?  That's where the bishop's efforts needed to be directed, and that's the only answer that mattered.

Then he thought for a moment, as if he was remembering he was addressing bishoprics including clerks, and not just bishops.  Still looking humorously sheepish, he hastily added that we do have to make sure we do a sufficient job with the paperwork too, and to be good to our clerks and help them do the job the Lord gave them to do.
